After representing CIPPEC at the W20 Summit in Berlin, Gala Díaz Langou, Director of CIPPEC’s Social Protection Program, will participate next Monday in a panel session called ‘The W20 and the W7: lessons learned in 2017’ together with Paola Subacchi, Senior Research Fellow at Chatam House, Marta Dassu, Chair of the Aspen Initiative for Europe and President of Women Empower the World (WE) in Italy, and Claudia Grosse-Leege, Managing Director of the Association of German Women Entrepreneurs (VdU as per its acronym in German) and Co-chair of the W20 during Germany’s G20 presidency.
The panel session will assess the impact of the W20 and other multilateral initiatives aimed at promoting gender-inclusive growth. After discussing both the achievements and the challenges, the panel will consider new measures to ensure the G20 and the G7 fulfill their commitment on furthering the economic empowerment of women.
The international economic architecture is changing and is no longer blind to gender issues. The G20, the G7, the United Nations and the international financial institutions acknowledge that empowering women and promoting their engagement in every sector of the economy are key to achieve sustainable growth. However, the pace of change is still too slow, and therefore more active policies are required.
At the Forum attendants will exchange ideas on topics included or to be added in the international economic agenda, in order to develop a gender-inclusive growth policy framework for the next G20 presidency and to support the W20, the G20 engagement group that focuses on promoting gender inclusiveness and gender equality towards a strong, sustainable and balanced growth.
Argentina will lead the G20 in 2018. Chairing the international forum will be one of the greatest political and diplomatic challenges of Argentina’s recent history and will also include hosting a summit in the City of Buenos Aires. CIPPEC, being a think tank, is part of two G20 engagement groups, which formulate policy recommendations for consideration by the member countries of the international forum: the Think20 (T20), made up by public policy institutions, and the Women20 (W20), composed of gender-related organizations.
About the 2017 International Policy Forum
This year the International Policy Forum on Gender-Inclusive Growth – first held in Canberra in 2014 during Australia’s G20 presidency – will analyze, discuss and recommend innovative policies to foster gender-inclusive growth in the G20 member countries. The 2017 Forum, entitled ‘Recognizing Women’s Role in Our Economic Future’, convenes key public officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs, scholars and journalists to assess progress towards gender equality, monitor the implementation of the G20 summit commitments, and analyze those issues that represent major barriers inhibiting women’s full economic participation. The debates will further the work done at workshops held in Berlin, Brussels, London, New York and Washington D.C.
