CIPPEC and CARI will co-chair the T20

In consonance with the Argentinian government’s high hopes for a successful G20 meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Faurie, invited José María Lladós, Academic Secretary of CARI (Spanish acronym for Argentine Council for International Relations) – acting on behalf of CARI’s President, former Foreign Affairs Minister Adalberto Rodríguez Giavarini – and Jorge Mandelbaum, President of the Board of Directors of CIPPEC (Spanish acronym for Center for the Implementation of Public Policies Promoting Equity and Growth) to meet him at Palacio San Martín.

In order to promote cooperation and the exchange of ideas among the different civil society stakeholders, it was agreed that both think tanks would coordinate the activities of the Think20 (T20). Therefore, CARI and CIPPEC will co-chair this forum in 2018, where recommendations and proposals will be formulated to be submitted for consideration by the G20 during Argentina’s presidency. This year Germany chaired the T20, and both CARI and CIPPEC participated actively in working meetings and activities, together with their German and Chinese counterparts.

The T20 is a think tanks network that convenes before each G20 presidential summit in order to analyze the main topics of its agenda and formulate proposals. Its aim is to provide the political community with advice based on research and subject-matter experts’ opinions.

The meeting was also attended by Pedro Villagra Delgado, Argentina’s G20 sherpa, and Tomás Kroyer, Undersecretary for Institutional Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship. CIPPEC was also represented in the meeting by Mercedes Méndez Ribas, Institutional Development Director, and by Guillermo Stanley, member of the Board of Directors. Gustavo Martínez, CARI’s Coordination Secretary, also attended the meeting on behalf of that institution.

Chairing the G20 will be one of the greatest political and diplomatic challenges of Argentina’s recent history and includes a summit that will take place in the City of Buenos Aires.
